Morocco is still very much a cash society, the Moroccan Dirham (MAD) is the official currency which can be bought at certain international airports outside of the country, but at a higher cost.
It’s always better to buy MAD once you’re in the country, either by withdrawing cash from an ATM or by exchanging hard currency to MAD at an exchange office.
“Cash is king” in Taghazout
Almost everywhere you go in the village, cash is the only accepted form of payment, the Moroccan Dirham is the main currency, but some gift shops, restaurants and hotels will also accept hard currencies that can be converted in the country (ie: USD, EUR, GBP…).
There are two ATMs in the village on the main road, however a considerable amount of guests have reported that their cards didn’t work with any of the ATMs in the village, either due to problems with their bank not allowing it or when the ATMs have ran out of bills. The solution is the currency exchange office, which can be used to exchange major currencies to Moroccan Dirhams (MAD) or to withdraw cash in Dirhams via a money transfer service such as Remitly (use this link https://www.surfcamp-taghazout.com/cashplus to get a discount on your first transfer), the cash pick up point is called “CashPlus”, it’s located at Taghazout main square here: https://goo.gl/maps/wyAWL9vA5D5EQpyK7
Bringing cash from home is a good idea!
Our advice is to bring cash with you (if it’s EUR, USD, GBP, CAD or CHF) from home and exchange it to Dirhams whenever you need it, or use the ATMs at the airport and withdraw enough cash for your trip, make sure to keep the receipt so you can exchange whatever is left back to one of the major currencies mentioned above at the airport on your return trip.
Where can I pay with card in Taghazout?
Most hotels and hostels are able to take cards, but they usually charge a 5% transaction fee because of the high cost for them.
There are also a few restaurants that accept card payment, but not for small bills (less than 150 or 100 dirhams).
